A refrigerant gas recuperator is a counter-current energy recovery heat exchanger, designed for special purposes. It is positioned within the supply and exhaust sources of an air treatment system or industrial process exhaust gas, in order to recover lost heat.

Generally, they are used to extract heat from the exhaust and use it to preheat the air entering the combustion system. In this way, they use residual energy to heat the air, compensating for part of the fuel and thereby improving the energy efficiency of the system as a whole.

In many types of processes, combustion is used to generate heat, and in this case, the recuperator serves to recover this heat in order to reuse or recycle it. The term recuperator also refers to liquid flow heat exchangers used for heat recovery in chemical industries, refineries, and closed processes such as the water-ammonia absorption refrigeration cycle.
